The Three Types of Dental Mouthguards That Stop Teeth Grinding

Teeth Grinding is commonly known as Bruxism. Bruxism is a common problem for most people. It typically occurs during sleep. Imagine when you suddenly wake up and find that your teeth have been damaged. This could stop you from talking, eating and smiling confidently because of the damage teeth grinding has caused. That is why dental mouthguards (known as Invisalign braces) are recommended, to cover the upper teeth and protects the soft tissue within your jawline.

Luckily, dental mouthguards help protect your teeth and help you get a good nights sleep. Most dental mouthguards are made of acrylic and are custom developed for proper fit and comfort.

Here are the three basic types of mouthguards for teeth grinding:

The Three Mouthguard Types

  1. Stock Mouth Protectors – This type of mouthguard is custom-made personally by your dentist. Because they are made to cater an individual mouth needs, this type is more expensive than others, although is inexpensive in general. There are no adjustments that can be made once it’s developed for your mouth. After trying and testing this product, breathing can be difficult and the protection to your teeth is limited. This type is not recommended by dentists.
  2. Custom Fitted Mouth Protectors – Custom fitted guards are typically made in the dental office and are expected to be the most expensive. The benefits of a custom-fitted mouthguard are broad. They are most comfortable, they offer the best protection to your teeth and you can breathe deeply and smoothly when placed in your mouth. The dentist will examine your teeth and the mouthguard is molded over the model of your teeth to make sure they are developed to fit perfectly.
  3. Boil and Bite Protectors – These types of mouthguards can be purchased at sporting good stores. This type is made of thermoplastic material and requires to be placed in boiling hot water so that it softens. Once it is bitten on, it molds itself around your teeth. They are relatively comfortable, although the perfect mold should not be expected due to its material.

Which Is Recommended for Teeth Grinding?

There are more benefits from getting a custom-based mouthguard so that wraps around your teeth comfortably. The dentist will produce a molded model so that when the mouthguard is made, it is custom-fitted. This means when you’re wearing the mouthguard at night, it should feel comfortable and soft. Not only that, your teeth within your upper jaw and lower jaw will be separated from the mouthguard, keeping your teeth away from damage and ensuring you experience a comfortable and relaxing nights sleep.
