Caring for Your Teeth As You Age

Our teeth require care.

Since we are children, we learn to maintain good oral habits so that they remain healthy for a long time.

But time passes.

As we get older, taking care of our teeth becomes even more essential. Although we may not be able to see it, our mouth does not escape the fact of getting older.

In general, the changes that we can experience in our oral health as we advance in age are:

  1. Decreased secretion of saliva and dry mouth.
  2. Tooth wear. They can become sharper; they can break and begin to turn yellowish.
  3. Receding gums and some loss of alveolar bone. In this situation, the probability of losing a tooth is greater, and it can even make it difficult to install a removable prosthesis.
  4. Tissues lose some defensive capabilities and are more prone to bacterial and fungal infections.

But fear not.

Although these changes generally occur, it does not mean that you will lose your teeth.

If we maintain care, our teeth can accompany us for the rest of our lives.

Today, we will show you how to take care of your teeth as you get older.

How to take care of your teeth

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day: This is something you should not only do as you get older but always. Daily brushing, especially at night and with a fluoride cream, will go a long way in maintaining your oral health.
  1. Remove dental prostheses: If you already have one of these pieces installed, you must clean them daily. Otherwise, your oral mucosa will be affected. We recommend cleaning it with neutral soap and a soft brush.
  1. Use dental floss to clean the spaces between your teeth: We recommend that you try to do this activity at least once a day. You could also use interproximal brushes. They are ideal for removing food debris from your teeth.
  1. Have healthy habits: Drink water and eat healthily. If you smoke, consider quitting. Also, if you drink frequently, reduce this practice. Having a healthy lifestyle will always bring positive vibes to your oral health.
  1. Do not lose sight of the symptoms: Try to be attentive to any signal your body sends you about a problem in the oral cavity. If you see any change or alteration in your mouth, teeth, or gums, go to a specialist who can take charge and help you.
  1. Go to the dentist regularly. Try to schedule check-ups regularly. Your dentist will monitor the progress of any condition and attend to it immediately.

It is also good to inform the specialist about the medications taken.
